Resource Spotlight: Early Pregnancy Loss – Quality Improvement Coordinator Checklist

Updated: Jun 3

Why was this checklist developed?

The Sunnybrook Early Pregnancy and Infant Loss Network created this checklist to support healthcare and service professionals leading the implementation of early pregnancy loss (EPL) resources within their practice settings. Integrating new tools and processes—especially those that involve emotionally sensitive care—can be complex. This checklist offers a structured, thoughtful guide to ensure key steps like staff education, patient communication, and resource adaptation are not overlooked. It’s designed to promote sustainable, high-quality implementation that centers the patient experience.

Who is it intended for?

This tool is specifically designed for:

  • Quality Improvement Coordinators

  • Clinical leads

  • Healthcare and service professionals

It’s particularly useful for those working in emergency departments, primary care, or community health settings where EPL care is provided, and who are responsible for implementing or coordinating the use of related resources.

How does it benefit patients?

By guiding professionals through a compassionate and consistent implementation process, the checklist ensures that individuals experiencing early pregnancy loss receive:

  • Trauma-informed and respectful care

  • Clear, supportive information

  • Consistent experiences across different providers

  • Better communication and follow-up support

The result is a more coordinated, caring approach that honours the emotional and physical needs of patients during a deeply vulnerable time.
